What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin to generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. It is also sometimes called collagen induction therapy and may be used to reduce the appearance of acne scarring and stretch marks.
Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. Ideally, the needle pricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and thus skin makes new collagen-rich tissue. The new skin, in turn is more even in skin tone and texture. Bby encouraging the skin to make tissue, there may be more collagen to make the skin firmer, too.
Microneedling is used to treat several facial imperfections such as:
- Acne scars
- Age spots (sun spots)
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Large pores
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Uneven skin tone
Microneedling is performed by our Complexion Medical Cosmetic Nurse. Your Complexion Medical Cosmetic Nurse will make small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool. The pinpricks are so small that you likely won’t notice them after the procedure. They will move the tool evenly across your skin so that they new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too. After microneedling, your skin works fairly quickly to rejuventate new tissue. You should see results within a couple weeks.
The same treatment as above but your Complexion Medical Cosmetic Nurse will also start with a standard blood draw from the patient’s arm. Next, the tube of blood is put into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins the blood tube to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma, rich in platelets is then injected directly into the location of concern. The injections begin across the area of concern approximately every half inch over the area . Typically, the entire procedure takes about an hour.
Risks and side effects
Microneedling is generally well tolerated and there are few side effects. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation. Talk to our nurse about the potential side effects of microneedling.
Microneedling should not be used in pregnant or lactating women, or by people who have certain skin conditions.
Be sure to report all medications that you are on before the procedure including herbs and supplements at your consultation. Many providers will not recommend PRP if you:
- Are on blood thinners
- Are a heavy smoker
- Have a history of alcohol or drug abuse
- Diagnosed with chronic infections
- Chronic liver disease
- Chronic skin disease
- Hemodynamic instability
- Metabolic disorder
- Platelet dysfunction syndromes
- Systemic disorder
